Liquid Crystals in Electric Field

چکیده

Phase transitions occur in various systems in electric field. To treat such problems we need to construct a Ginzburg-Landau free energy including electrostatic interactions and electric field effects under each given boundary condition.1) The gross variables include the order parameter ψ, the polarization p, and the charge density ρ. (Note ψ = p in ferroelectric systems.) In this letter we present such a theory for liquid crystals in nematic states,2) since there seems to be no systematic theory of electric field effects for anisotropic fluids. We also examine the deformation of the director around a charged particle, since the nematic order around a neutral colloid particle or emulsion droplet has been extensively studied.3,4) We shall see that the charge-induced orientation is intensified with decreasing the particle radius R and/or increasing the charge number Z, while the surface anchoring of a neutral particle can be achieved for large radius because the penalty of the Frank free energy needs to be small.

Electrically switchable cylindrical Fresnel lens based on holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals using a Michelson interferometer

Fabricating an electrically switchable cylindrical Fresnel lens based on holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (H-PDLC) using a Michelson interferometer is reported. Simplicity of the method and possibility of fabricating different focal length lenses in a single set up are among the advantages of the method. It is demonstrated that the Fresnel structured zone plate acts as a cylindrica...

In-line D-fiber electric field sensor using chiral liquid crystals

Optical electric field sensors have been used for the measurement of high-voltages found in power substations. Typical sensors are based on electro-optic crystals and hence require the coupling of light into and out of the crystals from optical fibers. This coupling is difficult and costly. The objective of the work presented here is the design and implementation of an optical electric field se...

Investigation of Bragg Gratings Recorded in Polymer- Dispersed Liquid Crystals

Bragg gratings, holographically formed in polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (H-PDLCs) are studied. Mixture of the commercially available E7 liquid crystal and NOA65 polymer in ration 1:1 are employed. Polymerisation in presence of electric field is produced. A significant increase of the diffraction efficiency in the case of field-applied recording is observed. The exposure characteristics, ele...

Propelling and spinning of microsheets in nematic liquid crystals driven by ac electric field.

Dynamics of microparticles in isotropic liquids by transducing the energy of an applied electric field have been studied for decades. Recently, such studies in anisotropic media like liquid crystals have opened up new perspectives in colloid science. Here, we report studies on ac-electric-field-driven dynamics of microsheets in nematic liquid crystals. In planar aligned liquid crystals, with ne...

Synchrotron X-ray Microbeam Characterization of Smectic a Liquid Crystals under Electric Field

When an electric field is applied to chiral smectic A (SmA) liquid crystals, a tilt is induced in the director of orthogonal SmA liquid crystals (electroclinic effect). The layer shrinkage due to the tilted smectic arrangement is mitigated by local layer deformation. This paper presents detailed measurements of the local layer spacing under the electroclinic effect of the chiral SmA phase in a ...

Freedericksz transition threshold in nematic liquid crystals filled with ferroelectric nano- particles

A key liquid crystalline property for electro-optic applications is the Frederiks threshold electric field. There has been recent experimental interest in liquid crystal-based colloidal suspensions in which the colloidal nanoparticles both possess a permanent electric polarization and provide strong director anchoring on the particle surface. Such suspensions are sometimes known as Filled Liqui...
